Pawlenty blasts Obama at Iowa rally

DES MOINES, Iowa, April 17 (UPI) -- To the cheers of Iowa Republicans, likely presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty accused President Barack Obama of breaking his promises.

Addressing a Tea Party rally outside the state Capitol in Des Moines Saturday, the former Minnesota governor said: "He pledged he would cut the budget deficit in half during his first term. Has President Obama broken his promise to America?"

"As a senator, Barack Obama said we should not raise the debt ceiling limit. It would be an example or evidence of failed leadership. Now he's become president and he's advocating for raising the debt ceiling. Has he broken his promise to America?"

Each time the crowd shouted, "Yes!"

Pawlenty also won applause saying, Obama has "proven that somebody deserves a Nobel prize less than Al Gore," and "I'm not one to question Obama's birth certificate, but I do question what planet he's from."

He touted his record in the more liberal neighboring state, the Des Moines Register reported.

"We did performance pay for teachers, public employee pension reform, cut taxes, reduced spending, tort reform, welfare reform, and on down the list," Pawlenty said. "If we can make conservative change in Minnesota, we can do it anywhere."
