WASHINGTON, April 14 (UPI) -- U.S. Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, inched closer to running for president next year, forming a fundraising account that allows him to gauge donor support.

Paul's political aide Jesse Benton confirmed Thursday that the "test the waters" account was created, and money could be transferred into a campaign should Paul officially enter the contest, The Hill reported.

The announcement comes as other possible GOP candidates also have moved toward the campaign trail.

Former Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., established a fundraising structure similar to Paul's earlier this week. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney formed an exploratory committee. Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty hired a campaign manager and pollster for his exploratory committee.

Paul, who twice sought the presidency, said he likely will announce his intentions by May.
