DETROIT, April 13 (UPI) -- Agents of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration searched medical marijuana facilities in Michigan in coordinated raids in five communities, officials said.

Searches were conducted Tuesday at homes and businesses in Detroit, Novi, Commerce Township, Walled Lake and Romulus, The Detroit News reported.

The DEA had no comment other than to confirm the raids and it was unclear whether agents were targeting the medical marijuana industry or investigating other alleged crimes, the newspaper said.

The raids took place in Oakland Country where authorities have said medical marijuana clinics were operating in a "clear abuse of Michigan marijuana exemptions."

The raids were the largest law-enforcement operation since voters approved the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act in 2008 that allowed people with qualifying debilitating medical conditions certified by a doctor to use marijuana.
