Landlord denies guilt in monoxide deaths

TOLEDO, Ohio, April 11 (UPI) -- A Toledo, Ohio, landlord pleaded not guilty Monday to causing the carbon monoxide poisoning of four tenants in one family.

Steven Snow, 49, facing four counts of reckless homicide, was taken into custody after the arraignment and is expected to be freed on a supervised bond. His next hearing was set for May 2, The Toledo Blade reported.

Snow could get 20 years in prison if convicted.

Authorities said Snow set up a gas-powered generator to power an electric heater in the kitchen near where Tamara McDaniel, 39; her son, Damien Reyes, 18; daughter, Domonique Reyes, 16, and daughter, Taralynn Wood, 10, were sleeping. They were pronounced dead the morning of March 23.

Snow was listed in one of the victims' cell phones as "Cousin Steve."

"We go back 20 years," he said.

He said he bought the home in December as a "family house" to help friends needing a place to stay while they got back on their feet.

But when the bodies were found, there was no electricity, heat, or water at the house, the Blade reported.
