9 shot, 1 dead at Pa. birthday party

CHESTER, Pa., April 9 (UPI) -- One person was shot dead and eight wounded at a birthday party in Chester, Pa., police said Saturday.

Police told the Philadelphia Daily News the shooting occurred around 11:30 Friday night at the Minaret Temple, a fraternal organization, and a suspect is in custody.

Two of the wounded were in critical condition at Crozer-Chester Medical Center and six were stable Saturday morning.

One victim was shot in the head, and two weapons were found at the scene.

Mayor Wendell Butler Jr. said the event "probably was a young persons' party, probably people in their late teens."

There reportedly were dozens of witnesses to the crime.
