WASHINGTON, March 21 (UPI) -- Workers wanting to check their U.S. employment eligibility status -- good news, there's an online service for that.
E-Verify Self Check gives users the chance to correct inaccuracies in their Homeland Security or Social Security records before applying for jobs, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said Monday in a release announcing the launch of the free, secure service.
E-Verify Self Check allows workers to better protect themselves from potential workplace discrimination that may arise from an employer's abusing the E-Verify system, Napolitano said in the joint announcement with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Director Alejandro Mayorkas.
"E-Verify is a smart, simple, and effective tool that allows us to work with employers to help them maintain a legal workforce," Napolitano said. "The E-Verify Self Check service will help protect workers and streamline the E-Verify process for businesses."
E-Verify Self Check service is available to users with an address and who are physically in Arizona, Idaho, Colorado, Mississippi, Virginia or the District of Columbia. The E-Verify Self Check service will be expanded on a rolling basis, Homeland Security officials said.
The E-Verify program compares information from the Employment Eligibility Verification Form against federal government databases to verify workers' employment eligibility, Napolitano said.
E-Verify Self Check, developed through a Homeland Security Department-Social Security Administration partnership, is the first online E-Verify program offered directly to workers and job seekers, Napolitano said.
