Abortion deaths up Philly homicide stats

PHILADELPHIA, March 3 (UPI) -- The seven newborn babies allegedly killed by a Philadelphia abortion doctor and his staff will swell this year's homicide statistics, police said.

Lt. Ray Evers said all seven will be classified as black and male, the Philadelphia Daily News reported. He said the race and gender of only one, a black male, is known, but the FBI statistical system requires homicide victims be classified by race and gender, and most of Dr. Kermit Gosnell's patients were black.

"Males as a gender was picked, because we just picked males," Evers said.

The seven were allegedly delivered alive in late-term abortions and then killed. Gosnell is also charged with killing Karnamaya Mongar, an immigrant from Nepal, who died during a botched abortion.

All eight deaths occurred before this year, but FBI reporting guidelines say homicides should be counted in the year police discover them.

Police have not found the remains of the seven newborns. Gosnell's staff photographed one.

Prosecutors said Wednesday they may seek the death penalty for Gosnell.
