PHILADELPHIA, March 1 (UPI) -- A Philadelphia judge has denied a doctor charged with killing a woman and seven newborn babies during late-term abortions access to his assets.
Dr. Kermit Gosnell, 70, could face the death penalty if he is convicted of eight counts of murder. The asset freeze was requested by a lawyer representing Yashoda Devi Gurung, whose mother, Karnamaya Mongar, 41, died at Gosnell's clinic in 2009, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
Common Pleas Judge Paul Panepinto scheduled a hearing March 9 and ordered a list of Gosnell's assets to be produced for the court. The judge signed the order for the freeze Friday.
Gosnell, his wife, Pearl, 50, and seven former employees face criminal charges.
They are scheduled for arraignment Wednesday.
District Attorney Seth Williams is expected to announce at the hearing whether he will seek the death penalty.
