Abortion doctor could face death penalty

PHILADELPHIA, March 2 (UPI) -- Philadelphia prosecutors said they could seek the death penalty against Dr. Kermit Gosnell, an abortion provider charged in the deaths of seven infants.

A spokeswoman said filing the court notice does not lock District Attorney Seth Williams into pursing the death penalty, but preserves the right to do so, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The notice was filed Tuesday, one day before the deadline.

Gosnell, who ran the Women's Medical Society in West Philadelphia, is accused of killing seven infants who were born alive and viable, and charged with one count of third-degree murder in the 2009 death of a patient administered too much anesthesia by unqualified clinic staff.
