Man guilty in daughter's 'honor killing'

PHOENIX, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- A jury in Phoenix found an Iraqi immigrant guilty of second-degree murder in the so-called "honor killing" of his daughter.

The jury Tuesday also returned guilty verdicts against Faleh Hassan Almaleki on aggravated assault and two counts of leaving the scene of an accident, KTVK-TV, Phoenix, reported.

During the trial, prosecutors told jurors Almaleki struck his 20-year-old daughter, Noor Almaleki, with his vehicle in October 2009 because she dishonored her family by adopting too many Western ways. Noor Almaleki died after two weeks in a coma.

Almaleki's vehicle also hit and seriously injured Amal Khalaf, the mother of Noor's boyfriend.

Defense lawyers said Almaleki was trying to spit on Khalaf but swerved and hit both women.
