Vigilante guilty in home invasion slayings

TUCSON, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- A jury in Tucson Monday found an anti-illegal immigration activitist guilty of murder in the slaying of a Latino man and a child during a 2009 home invasion.

The jury convicted Shawna Forde on eight counts, including counts of first-degree murder for killing Raul Flores and his daughter, Brisenia, who was 9 when Forde and two alleged accomplices forced their way into the Flores' home in Arivaca, Ariz. Prosecutors say the trio shot and killed Raul Flores and Brisenia Flores, and shot and wounded the girl's mother, Gina Gonzalez -- and had been planning to steal drugs, as well as money and weapons to use in setting up an anti-illegal immigration group.

Prosecutors told the court Forde, 43, was the ringleader of the raid, CNN reported.

The jury is scheduled to begin the penalty phase of the trial Tuesday. Forde could get the death penalty, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Raul and Brisenia Flores were American-born U.S. citizens.

Gonzalez testified during the trial that her daughter pleaded, "Please don't shoot me," before one of the invaders shot her.

Forde's alleged accomplices, Jason E. Bush and Albert R. Gaxiola, are to be tried this year.
