Man falls to death in Chicago shaft

CHICAGO, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- A 63-year-old man fell four stories down a parking garage dumbwaiter-style shaft to his death, Chicago authorities said.

The Chicago Tribune reported George Davis had just dropped off his wife at a theater and parked the car when the fatal accident happened Saturday. The couple were out celebrating her birthday and Valentine's day with a night out that was to include an Anita Baker concert at the Chicago Theater, the newspaper said.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Joe Roccasalva said it appeared Davis tried to access the conveyor-type lift, which is used by workers to access the various levels of the parking facility.

City police officer Armando Alvarez said the device was gated and signage designated it was for employee use only.

"I can't even imagine how this happened," a niece, D'Andrea Anderson, told the Tribune. "He's very, very intelligent. He's not the type of person who would try to do something like that."

Davis was a Marine Corps veteran who served three tours in Vietnam and also worked 16 years as a security guard at the Dirksen U.S. Courthouse and other federal buildings, Anderson said.
