Girl kept in bathroom was good student

DAYTON, Ohio, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- School officials say a girl allegedly imprisoned in a locked bathroom by her grandparents in Dayton, Ohio, was a good student.

A grand jury indicted Rivae Hart, 49, and her husband, 50, on charges of felony child abuse and kidnapping on Feb. 4.

Shawna Welch, principal of Wright Brothers School, told the Dayton Daily News the girl, now 9, has been an honor roll student since first grade. She said the child was clean and wore clean clothes to school, but teachers were sometimes worried about how she looked.

"She kind of looked like an older person in a child's body," Welch told the News.

Shelli Ridge told the Daily News she used to hear a child screaming when she lived next door to the Harts six years ago. Ridge, now a student of osteopathic medicine at the University of Ohio, said she once called police, although there is no record.

The Harts had been caring for their granddaughter and an 8-year-old grandson since 2004, police said. Child welfare officials say they are trying to locate their parents. The Harts also have sons 12 and 14, and all four children are in foster care.
