Secret Service agent shoots self in hip

Feb. 5, 2011 at 6:36 PM

CAMARILLO, Calif., Feb. 5 (UPI) -- A Secret Service agent assigned to protect Nancy Reagan accidentally shot himself during a firearms training session at a California range, police said.

A Ventura County sheriff's deputy said the agent, whose identity was not released, was wounded when his gun accidentally discharged while he was returning it to his holster Friday, KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, reported. The bullet struck him in the hip, causing a wound that was described as not life-threatening.

The division assigned to protect the wife of the late President Ronald Reagan had rented part of the Ventura County Sheriff's Department range in Camarillo for a routine training session. The session was not connected to events this weekend in honor of Reagan's 100th birthday at the presidential library in Simi Valley, the Ventura Star said.
