Baby delivered after icy road accident

HOUSTON, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Houston paramedics say they delivered a healthy baby boy after his parents' car slid on an icy highway and crashed into a guardrail.

The mother and father were on their way to Ben Taub General Hospital about 5 a.m. Friday when the husband lost control of the car and it ended up on the guardrail, the Houston Chronicle reported.

"His wife was in labor at the time and he was taking her into Ben Taub," said Firefighter/EMT Ryan Machacek, who drove an ambulance responding from Houston Fire Station 46.

The parents were loaded into the ambulance, which headed for the hospital but went into a slide as it exited the highway.

Firefighter/EMT Joshua Rieves told Machacek to stop the vehicle because "the baby was coming."

By the time Machacek was able to stop and get the back doors of the ambulance opened the baby had arrived.

The baby and the parents, whose names were not released, were all doing well at the hospital, Machacek said.
