Lesbian school royalty cheered

CHAMPLIN, Minn., Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Several gay couples marched as pairs at the annual Pep Fest at a Minnesota high school after two lesbians took the school district to court.

In the past, the 24 students elected to the royal court for the Snow Days rally and dance at Champlin Park High School in the Minneapolis suburb of Champlin have walked in as male-female couples. When Desiree Shelton and Sarah Lindstrom said they wanted to walk in together, the school changed the format last week so each student would be walking with an adult, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported.

Shelton and Lindstrom sued the Anoka-Hennepin School District Friday. Their lawsuit was dismissed when the district agreed to allow students to march with the partners of their choice.

The couple were cheered by hundreds of their classmates Monday evening when they appeared in black suits and pink ties, the St. Paul Pioneer Press said. Two male couples and another lesbian pair also participated.

"This was about more than just me and my school," Lindstrom said. "I didn't care about winning; I just wanted to walk."

The district has been under scrutiny because of a string of suicides by students who were either gay or bullied by other students who thought they were gay.
