Boy falls down Illinois elevator shaft

JOLIET, Ill., Jan. 24 (UPI) -- A 2-year-old boy was critically injured in a 30-foot fall down an elevator shaft in a Joliet, Ill., hotel, police said.

The child, who was not named, fell into a shaft at the Plaza Hotel, Lt. Jeff Allbert told the Chicago Sun-Times.

The boy, staying at the hotel with his mother and a sibling, had left their room alone and was apparently playing with the elevator's button, the officer said.

He suffered head injuries and was flown from Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet to Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
