Suspected 'Twilight Rapist' nabbed

EDNA, Texas, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- Police in Texas say they have arrested a man suspected of being the "Twilight Rapist."

Billy Joe Harris, 53, a non-commissioned Texas Department of Criminal Justice employee, was arrested Saturday in Jackson County, the San Antonio Express-News reported.

Police arrested Harris after responding to a medical alert call at an elderly woman's house. He was linked Sunday by DNA evidence to five other assaults.

Authorities had dubbed the unknown serial attacker the "Twilight Rapist" because the assaults occurred before dawn. The man targeted women from 65 to 91 years old, most of whom lived alone, police said.

Edna police who responded to the woman's medical alert Saturday said they saw a man run from the residence. After a short foot chase, Harris was taken into custody.

The first known suspected attack by the "Twilight Rapist" was in January 2009 and it was followed by as many as 12 rapes, attempted rapes or burglaries in the area through November 2009, police said.

Harris remained in the Jackson County Jail Sunday.
