Florida rancher gravely hurt in cow attack

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla., Jan. 5 (UPI) -- A Florida man was critically injured when a cow attacked him at a ranch, authorities said.

Oscar Wilcox, 70, was airlifted to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute in Fort Pierce after Saturday's incident in Port St. Lucie, the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office reported. He was listed in critical condition Tuesday, a hospital spokeswoman told TCPalm.com.

Wilcox's wife said her husband was repairing a fence in the pasture when she heard screaming. She drove over and saw the cow "attacking" him.

"She was able to hit the cow several times with the truck to get it off of her husband," the sheriff's report states.

Wilcox apparently had shot the cow, a crossbreed with 12- to 18-inch horns, with a .22-caliber pistol loaded with bird-shot shells, but dropped the weapon during the attack.

His wife picked up the gun and shot the cow several times in the face, driving it away.

Mrs. Wilcox "stated that the cow has always been nasty and had attacked her about a week ago, causing bruises," the report states.
