NEW YORK, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- A blizzard cut power to a New York subway Monday morning, trapping more than 500 people aboard a train, the transit authority said.
The Manhattan-bound A train, filled with passengers from Kennedy Airport who already had waited hours for flights that were canceled, came to an sudden stop between the Aqueduct and Rockaway Boulevard stations in Queens, the New York Daily News reported.
The train has been moved to Aqueduct, but the passengers, trapped for six hours, said they were not allowed to get off despite desperately needing bathrooms, water and food.
"It wasn't like the storm just snuck up on us," David Kelley, who tried to reach his security job at Kennedy before being forced to turn around, told the Daily News. "They were aware. ... This isn't a Third World country. This is New York City."
The passengers' hopes were lifted with an announcement that a rescue train was on the way. But a second announcement came soon after: "The rescue train is stuck."
