Police shoot suspect in car chase

BROOKLYN, Ill., Dec. 20 (UPI) -- A high-speed chase in pursuit of a stolen car ended with police shooting of one of the vehicle's passengers in St. Louis, police said.

The chase started early Sunday morning in Brooklyn, Ill., when police attempted to pull over a vehicle reported stolen, the Belleville (Ill.) News-Democrat reported.

When police attempted to pull over a Dodge Charger containing four men, the Charger struck the police vehicle almost head-on before fleeing across the Mississippi River.

Three Brooklyn police units continued chasing the car before it hit some ice, spun off the road and crashed into a tree. The men jumped out of the car and one pointed a gun at officers, police allege.

An officer fired a shot, striking the man. Police chased three of the suspects down on foot, but the fourth was still at large.

"The officer feared for his life when a person pulled a weapon on him and he fired at him," said Brooklyn Police Chief Delbert Marion.

The officer was placed on administrative leave, which is routine in officer-involved shootings.

The officers in the vehicle struck by the stolen car were treated for minor injuries. The condition and name of the suspect shot in the incident were not available.
