WASHINGTON, Dec. 10 (UPI) -- U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner was admitted to a Washington hospital Friday for a kidney stone, the Treasury Department said.

"Secretary Geithner was admitted to George Washington University Hospital this morning for treatment for a kidney stone," department spokesman Steve Adamske said in a statement.

"He will have a minor surgical procedure this afternoon to remove the kidney stone, and his physician expects that he will be discharged tomorrow with orders to rest this weekend. He has been told that he should be able to return to work on Monday."

Geithner canceled several appearances on Sunday morning news shows, including CBS's "Face the Nation," NBC's "Meet the Press" and ABC's "This Week," the department said. He is expected to testify Thursday before a congressional panel overseeing the Troubled Asset Relief Program.
