Obama "emphasized the need for North Korea to halt its provocative behavior and to meet its international obligations, including its commitments in the 2005 Six Party Joint Declaration," the statement said.

The president condemned North Korea for its attack on the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong Nov. 23 and the North's pursuit of a uranium enrichment program. He urged China to work with the United States and others to "send a clear message to North Korea that its provocations are unacceptable," the White House said.

He also highlighted the American commitment to the security of U.S. allies in the region, the readout indicated.

Concerning Iran, the White House said Obama stressed the importance of maintaining unity to address Iran's nuclear program.
