Navy to celebrate 100 years of aviation

SAN DIEGO, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- The Navy announced an air show, including a huge flyover of San Diego Bay, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of naval aviation, officials said.

More than 150 aircraft will participate in the flyover, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported Thursday.

Naval aviation began in 1911 when Lt. T.G. Ellyson trained at North Island in Coronado, the Union-Tribune reported.

"It is expected to be the largest aerial flyover since World War II and the largest in San Diego since November 1918," Navy spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Alli Myrick-Ellison said.

The Navy said the yearlong event is scheduled to begin Feb. 12 at North Island Naval Air Station and will allow the public to see the aircraft from viewing points around the bay.

Navy aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships tours will be offered, in addition to a tactical demonstration of Marine aircraft and ground equipment, the newspaper said.
