Las Vegas Walmart evacuated in bomb scare

LAS VEGAS, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- A man pulled a gun and dropped a suspicious bag, forcing evacuation of a Las Vegas Walmart, police said.

Metro Police Lt. Steve Herpolsheimer told the Las Vegas Sun the man tried to pass a bad check Saturday afternoon but Walmart staff recognized him from a similar attempt, and a loss-prevention officer asked him to come to an office.

The man refused and walked out. Then he pulled a gun and hit the employee on the head with it, Herpolsheimer said. The gun went off into the air, but nobody was hit. The employee was not seriously hurt.

The gunman fled, but left a backpack behind. When officers arrived, they found what seemed to be an explosive in it and called the bomb squad, police said.

The Walmart was evacuated for two hours as police removed the device and swept the premises with a bomb-detecting dog, Herpolsheimer said. Police took away the device to be dismantled.

Police are searching for the man, who left a fake ID with his photo, the lieutenant said.
