Fla. man tried to drown wife, police say

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., Sept. 24 (UPI) -- A Florida man tried to drown his pregnant wife, but strangers rescued her, police said.

David Chavez, 20, of West Palm Beach, pushed his 7-month-pregnant wife Amalia Ramires, 18, into the Intracoastal Waterway Wednesday and held her under before two passers-by saved her, according to a police report cited by The Palm Beach Post. Chavez is charged with attempted domestic first-degree murder.

On Thursday, Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Ted Booras ordered Chavez held in lieu of $100,000 bail and barred him from contacting his wife.

West Palm Beach police said Ramires told them she and Chavez were walking through a park, discussing her pregnancy.

When they reached the end of a dock, she said, Chavez pushed her into the water, jumped in after her and pushed her under.

An unidentified man told police he and a friend were loading their boat when they heard the couple talking, and he heard Chavez tell Ramires he did not want the baby.

The witness said Chavez pushed his wife, jumped in and held her down. The men jumped in, pulled the woman away from Chavez and restrained him until police arrived.
