U.S., Tunisia sign nuclear pact

VIENNA, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- U.S. officials say an agreement on nuclear safeguards and other non-proliferation topics has been signed by the Unites States and Tunisia.

The U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration says the Memorandum of Cooperation was signed with the Tunisian Ministry of Higher Education, an NNSA release said Wednesday.

NNSA Administrator Thomas D'Agostino and Dr. Adel Trabelsi, director general of Tunisia's Centre National des Sciences et Technologies Nucleaires, signed the memorandum at a ceremony at the International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference in Vienna.

"Today's agreement marks an important milestone in our cooperation with Tunisia and advances our joint interest in non-proliferation and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy," D'Agostino said.

The agreement covers areas of human resource development, nuclear safeguards and security, radiation protection, environmental, safety and health issues, low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste management and reactor operations safety, the NNSA said.

"This agreement reflects both our nations' commitment to supporting the safe and secure expansion of civil nuclear energy," D'Agostino said.
