Ten nabbed in computer thefts

DETROIT, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Michigan authorities say internal tracking devices led police to 104 laptop computers that were stolen from Detroit Public Schools.

Ten men, including two students from Michigan State University, have been charged in connection with the sale of the stolen computers to buyers in the United States, Canada and the United Arab Emirates, the Detroit Free Press reported Wednesday.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said the two Michigan State students, Nicholas Tisdale and Spartans tight end Dion Sims, are accused of receiving and concealing stolen property.

The other eight defendants are charged with burglary and receiving stolen property.

The crime ring was exposed as DPS continues to investigate the theft of 788 laptops worth more than $800,000 stolen from 29 schools since last year.

DPS Emergency Financial Manager Robert Bobb has pledged to halt what he said were continuing thefts of district property, The Detroit News reported.
