Poll: Most would agree to term limits

WASHINGTON, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A strong majority of U.S. voters approve of setting term limits for members of Congress, a Fox News poll indicated.

In the poll released Friday, 78 percent of the respondents indicated they favored setting term limits that put a cap on how long members of Congress could serve. Not far behind that, 70 percent of respondents indicated they had negative views of how Congress is doing.

In the poll of 900 registered voters, 84 percent of Republicans and 74 percent of Democrats indicated they support an overall time limit for senators and congressmen.

It is likely high disapproval ratings sparked a high rate of voters who viewed term limits favorably. Similarly, members of a minority party are more likely to approve of term limits than members of the party currently in power in Washington.

Power also appeared to pave the way for complacency. In the poll conducted Sept. 1-2 by Opinion Dynamics Corp., 40 percent of Republicans indicated they were "extremely" interested in November's elections, while only 19 percent of Democrats indicated they were "extremely" interested.

The poll carried a margin of error of plus and minus 3 percentage points.
