Poll: Some say judges too liberal

WASHINGTON, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- More than a third of Americans think U.S. judges are too liberal, while almost an equal number say judges are about right ideologically, a poll indicates.

In a poll of 1,000 likely voters, 38 percent called judges too liberal, 18 percent thought them too conservative and 31 percent said they felt judges have the right ideological balance, Rasmussen Reports said Monday.

Most of those identifying themselves as liberal or moderate voters said most judges are about right, but 65 percent of conservatives said most judges are too liberal, the poll showed.

By a 62 percent to 25 percent margin, voters believe that most judges should be elected rather than appointed.

In line with that, 53 percent said they believe judges have a political agenda while only 29 percent believe they generally remain impartial.

Republicans and unaffiliated voters overwhelmingly believe most judges have their own agenda, the poll found, while Democrats are evenly divided on the question.

The survey was conducted on Aug. 27-28. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.
