Makled was wanted in the United States on drug charges and in Colombia and Venezuela on murder charges; he is accused of trafficking 10 tons of cocaine into the United States and Europe every month, the report said.

Makled, known as "The Turk," will also face an extradition request from Venezuelan authorities who said he is responsible for two murders.

Investigators said he killed a newspaper columnist who wrote about drug cases in which Makled's family was named, and also killed a rival drug trafficker, the BBC said.
