Police said shots were fired in three locations in the area where the two people died.

Officers say the masked gunman shot an assault-style weapon 30 times, WTHR-TV, Indianapolis, said.

"The bottom line is we have eight people shot and two deceased and that's what's sad about this whole situation," Indianapolis Metropolitan Police spokesman Lt. Jeffrey Duhamel said. "It sounded like they were having a good time … basically a birthday party kind of thing and what the motive is, we just don't know."

No arrests have been made.

Monday's shooting was the second mass shooting in Indianapolis in nearly three weeks, police said. Gang-related shootings following Indiana Black Expo events July 17 and left 10 people wounded. Police said a suspected gang member has been charged.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard said the July 17 shooting and Monday's shooting were not connected.
