Putin sings with deported spies

MOSCOW, July 26 (UPI) -- Russia Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said he sang patriotic songs with 10 spies recently deported from the United States.

Putin told The Moscow Times he sang the Soviet-era songs with the spies when he visited Ukraine. Putin also rode his Harley-Davidson motorcycle during the visit, the newspaper reported Monday.

The prime minister did not say when he spoke with the group, which arrived in Moscow on July 9. But in a transcript on his Web site, he said: "I met with them. We talked about life."

Putin said he knows who betrayed the Russian spies. He did not identify the betrayers, but told the newspaper: "Traitors always end badly … they end up in the gutter as drunks or drug addicts."

The United States has not revealed how it discovered the spies, who were deported to Russia in exchange for four Russians jailed on espionage-related charges.

Putin, a former KGB agent, said he expects the deported spies will have "interesting, bright lives."
