Ex-Bridgeport mayor out of halfway house

HARTFORD, Conn., July 19 (UPI) -- Former Bridgeport, Conn., Mayor Joseph Ganim, convicted in 2003 on corruption charges, left a halfway house Monday and said he was eager to go home.

Ganim was transferred to the residence in February after serving seven years of a nine-year state prison sentence for racketeering, racketeering conspiracy, mail fraud and filing false tax returns.

"I think right now I'm looking forward to spending a lot of time at home, and catching up on some family time," said Ganim, who was convicted in 2003 of accepting bribes and kickbacks totaling about $500,000.

The (Hartford) Courant reported Ganim, who will be on supervised release for the immediate future, gained an overall positive reputation while in office. He declined Monday to say whether would consider running for office again.
