Shots miss Las Vegas police officers

LAS VEGAS, July 6 (UPI) -- Las Vegas police were looking for whoever fired several shots at officers Tuesday after a seemingly unrelated routine traffic stop.

Police Sgt. Andy Walsh said the incident started about 8 a.m. when one patrol officer pulled over a man he arrested on outstanding warrants. Walsh said shortly after a second officer arrived to assist with the arrest, shots were fired from an unknown location, striking a utility pole behind the squad cars, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported.

The officers summoned backup and drove off with the traffic suspect but a second set of officers who responded to investigate the shooting said they also heard several shots after they arrived at the scene.

A search of the area produced no suspects or weapon.

"They don't know what type of caliber it was," Walsh said.

None of the officers were hurt and they didn't return fire, the newspaper said.
