STANFORD, Calif., July 6 (UPI) -- Republican U.S. Senate nominee Carly Fiorina of California had reconstructive breast surgery Tuesday, an aide said.

Campaign Chief of Staff Deborah Bowker said in a statement Fiorina was in "good spirits" after the operation at Stanford University Medical Center, the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News reported.

"A quick recovery is expected, and Carly is looking forward to being back on the campaign trail in a matter of days," Bowker said.

The former Hewlett-Packard chief executive officer was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2009. Her treatment has included chemotherapy, a double mastectomy and radiation.

Fiorina faces incumbent Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer in November's general election.
