WASHINGTON, June 28 (UPI) -- Dick Cheney was discharged from a Washington-area hospital Monday, a spokesman for the former U.S. vice president said.

The 69-year-old Republican had been admitted to George Washington University Hospital Friday for treatment of fluid retention related to his coronary artery disease, ABC News reported. Cheney received intravenous medication during his hospital stay.

Cheney has had five heart attacks, dating to 1978. In 2001, he had a pacemaker installed in his chest and last September he had elective back surgery to treat lumbar spinal stenosis, ABC said.
