Brits less likely to blame BP for spill

WASHINGTON, June 24 (UPI) -- More than twice as many U.S. residents as Britons say BP is to blame for the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, a poll released Thursday indicated.

Britons were far more likely to describe President Obama as anti-British for his criticism of BP, Angus Reid Public Opinion said. Almost half of U.S. residents said BP's licenses for offshore drilling should be canceled.

Almost 63 percent of the U.S. residents polled by Angus Reid say BP bears most of the blame, while only 31 percent of Britons agree. While 36 percent of Britons say Obama is being anti-British, only 8 percent of U.S. respondents do.

More Britons, 69 percent, than U.S. residents, 55 percent, think BP will pay damages to those affected by the spill.

Angus Reid, a Canada-based polling company, surveyed 1,004 members of the Springboard USA panel and 2,018 members of the Springboard UK panel online June 8-10. The margin of error is 3.1 percentage points for U.S. results and 2.2 points for U.K. results.
