Poll: Generic ballot evenly split by party

PRINCETON, N.J., June 22 (UPI) -- Registered voters are evenly divided about which party's candidate would get their vote if the U.S. congressional elections were today, a Gallup poll indicated.

Gallup poll results released Tuesday indicate 46 percent of respondents preferred the Republican candidate and an equal number said they favored the Democratic candidate. Voter preferences have been closely split since Gallup began tracking them in March.

In recent weeks, Gallup noted some fluctuations within a 3-point range for candidates of both major parties. The fluctuations from 46 percent to 49 percent among Republicans and from 43 percent to 46 percent for Democrats are within the margin of error, pollsters said.

Still, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said, all of the recent results of the generic poll were more favorable to Republicans than Democrats. So far, this year's generic ballot results indicate a better year for Republicans than Democrats, Gallup said.

If polling continues to show a close race, Democrats would need a very strong turnout to be competitive in the fall, Gallup said.

Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews of 1,612 adults conducted June 14-20.The margin of error is 3 percentage points.
