Girl feared dead after kayak overturns

HOLLAND, Wis., June 10 (UPI) -- Divers searched Lake Michigan Thursday for a 9-year-old Chicago girl who fell from a kayak while paddling alone in Wisconsin.

Authorities said they were involved in a recovery operation and that Sofia Khan had almost certainly drowned. She disappeared Wednesday afternoon near Holland, Wis., where her family was vacationing.

Sheboygan County Sheriff's Capt. David Adams said the girl was not wearing a life jacket.

Sofia apparently fell from the kayak about 20 yards from the beach. Her father tried to swim out but found winds and current carrying the kayak farther from the shore.

Another beachgoer got to the kayak in a canoe, discovered it was empty and then required rescue by the Coast Guard when his canoe overturned.
