Body found in floating suitcase ID'd

SAN FRANCISCO, May 21 (UPI) -- A woman whose body was found in a suitcase floating in San Francisco Bay was a homicide victim, the medical examiner has ruled.

Police have not released any details about how the victim died, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. She has been identified as Pearla Ann Louis, 52, a San Francisco resident who had struggled with homelessness and substance abuse.

Louis was reported missing Monday. The next day, someone saw a suitcase floating in the water off the Embarcadero in San Francisco.

Investigators have asked anyone with information on Louis to come forward, the San Francisco Examiner reported.

"It took a little time to identify her and now we've got to run down neighbors, friends, people who knew her," Lt. Mike Stasko said. "We'll take as much information that we can."

In a similar crime four years ago, a woman's body was discovered after a sailor noticed a suitcase in the bay near the Golden Gate Bridge. The woman was recently identified through DNA as Donna Rossi, a 46-year-old from Oakland.
