Karzai visits Washington next week

WASHINGTON, May 7 (UPI) -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai will meet with U.S. President Barack Obama and members of Congress next week when he visits Washington, officials said.

Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes said the visit "comes at an important time as we continue to implement the president's strategy" in Central Asia, The Hill reported Friday.

The Afghan leader Wednesday will visit the White House, where he and Obama will have a news conference and lunch in the Cabinet Room for senior members of the national security team and their Afghan counterparts.

Karzai will visit Arlington National Cemetery Thursday morning.

Rhodes said Karzai will meet with congressional members during his visit but a schedule hasn't been determined.
