Canadian man charged in second murder

EDMONTON, Alberta, May 1 (UPI) -- A 39-year-old man being tried in the murder of a teenager on an Edmonton, Alberta, golf course now faces charges of killing a prostitute.

Michael Briscoe was in police custody awaiting trial in the April 4, 2005, rape and murder of 13-year-old Nina Courtepatte when he was charged Friday with first-degree murder in the death of Ellie May Meyer, a 33-year-old prostitute, the Edmonton Journal reported. Meyer's body was found May 6, 2005, in a field east of Edmonton.

Another man, Joseph Laboucan, 24, has been charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Meyer and faced a preliminary hearing last month.

Police did not provide specifics on what prompted the new charge against Briscoe.

"Investigators have to go with the evidence that they have," Cpl. Wayne Oakes, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police spokesman, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. "And as I understand the circumstances right now, the charge against both Mr. Laboucan and Briscoe are evidence-based."

Briscoe had been the only one of five charged in Courtepatte's murder who was released. But in April the Supreme Court of Canada ruled he must again stand trial to face charges of first-degree murder, aggravated assault and kidnapping in the Courtepatte case.
