Cleaver-wielding man killed by police

DENVER, April 14 (UPI) -- Denver police officers shot and killed a man who charged at them armed with a knife and a meat cleaver, officials said.

Officers responded to an early morning call of a family disturbance involving a man with a knife in the Stapleton neighborhood of the city, The Denver Post reported Wednesday.

They encountered the man armed with a knife and cleaver and tried to speak with him but the man charged the officers, Denver Police Department spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

A "less lethal" round, a large rubber bullet, was fired by one officer in an attempt to subdue the attacker, but the man kept coming and another officer fired his weapon "to stop the threat," Jackson said.

The victim was pronounced dead on arrival at University Hospital.

The names of the victim and the officer firing the fatal shot were not released. An investigation has begun, the Post reported.
