LONDON, April 13 (UPI) -- A senior Amnesty International official says she has left her job after being suspended for questioning the organization's link to a pro-jihadist group.
Gita Sahgal, 53, says she feels serving as interim head of Amnesty International's gender unit was a waste of time, The Times of London reported online Tuesday.
Sahgal was suspended in February after complaining about the group's links to Moazzam Begg, a former Guantanamo Bay inmate, and his organization, Cageprisoners.
"He supports Islamic states where women are second-class citizens," Sahgal said.
Begg's organization has defended some Muslim prisoners, including Khalid Sheik Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks in the United States.
Amnesty International has circulated an internal memo saying Sahgal's departure is due to "irreconcilable differences of view over policy" regarding Begg and Cageprisoners.
