LAS VEGAS, April 13 (UPI) -- A Nevada woman who was left scarred by an ax attack that killed her baby identified the man charged with the crime as her assailant during a court hearing.
Sandra Lisset Castro appeared at a preliminary hearing in Las Vegas with her face and head covered by a white scarf, the Las Vegas Sun reported. Her husband, Carlos, supported her as she walked to the witness box, and she held a rosary in her other hand.
A justice of the peace is hearing testimony on whether there is enough evidence to hold Harold Montague, 33, for trial. Montague allegedly wounded his disabled sister-in-law and Castro with a medieval-style battle ax and killed Castro's 4-month-old son, Damian.
Castro said she was walking to the grocery with Damian in a stroller when she felt something hit her head.
"He was laughing and mocking me, and continued striking me. That's all I remember," she said.
Asked to identify her attacker, she pointed to Montague.
Other witnesses included a woman who saw the attack and called 911 and the first police officer to respond.
The hearing is scheduled to continue Thursday.
