Warning issued to U.S. border officers

EL PASO, Texas, March 25 (UPI) -- The U.S. consortium that focuses on crimes along the border warns that a violent Mexican prison gang may try to retaliate against U.S. officers, officials say.

The El Paso Intelligence Center issued a bulletin urging all U.S. law enforcement officers to wear their protective vests and alert family members about the possible threat, USA Today reported Thursday.

The prison gang called Barrio Azteca is believed to be involved in the March 13th slaying of three people linked to the U.S. consulate in Juarez, Mexico.

Last week, more than 200 officers from 20 separate law enforcement agencies conducted a series of raids against the gang that has links to the Mexican drug cartels.

Kevin O'Keefe of the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, says members of Barrio Azteca are suspected in the three slayings but it is not known whether the victims were targeted or mistakenly caught up in an attack.
