Alaska defending wolf-killing program

ANCHORAGE, Alaska, March 22 (UPI) -- Alaska Department of Fish and Game officials said they will create a video intended to dispel concerns about a wolf-killing program in the state.

Riley Woodford, who is working on the Fish and Game project, said it is focused on addressing misunderstandings about the wolf program, which is intended to protect moose and caribou populations in six specific zones statewide, the Anchorage (Alaska) Daily News said Sunday,

"We're not trying to make a big commercial to get people to like predator control. But we want people to understand that wolves are not almost extinct in Alaska, there are lots of wolves in Alaska, and this is how it works," Woodford said.

Woodford said his department routinely fields phone calls from citizens who are concerned the program is targeting a dwindling wolf population, or that predator control is simply unnecessary hunting.

The Daily News said bids for the video project are being collected by state officials.
