3-year-old said forgotten at restaurant

WARREN, Mich., March 16 (UPI) -- A Warren, Mich., couple may face charges for allegedly leaving their 3-year-old son at a restaurant where they were celebrating his birthday, officials said.

The boy was placed in foster care Saturday after workers at Caesarland found the child alone, the Detroit News reported Tuesday.

When questioned by police Monday, the boy's mother, 33, and father, 41, told police they each thought the other had the boy or that he was with a grandmother, Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer said.

The parents, who were not publicly identified, live in separate apartments in the same complex. The father showed up at Caesarland Monday to get the boy and neither parent contacted police, Dwyer said.

"I've never heard of a situation like this in all my years where you have a birthday party for a 3-year-old and everybody forgets about him," Dwyer said.

The boy was to remain in foster care while the case was reviewed for possible charges by the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office. The parents, neither of whom has criminal record, were questioned and released.
