Du, who was being held on $55 million bond, faces as long as 20 years in prison if convicted in Greene County Common Pleas Court.

Du fled to Canada in 1997 and was arrested in 2008 after police tracked him to a Toronto suburb where he was working under an assumed name as a cellphone manager, the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News reported Monday.

When arrested, Du was wearing a necklace with an engagement ring he said he had once given Mai, the News reported.

Prosecutors planned to call more than 40 witnesses including Mai, who still bears scars from the attack, authorities said.
